What made you start in the Airbnb Business?
“It’s simply figuring out one step and then the next and then the next. There’s not one way, just find your way”
I couldn’t afford my rent one month so I listed an extra room in the townhouse I was renting.
What are some of the challenges you faced and how did you overcome it?
Delegating. I was raised to be a hard worker and to take care of things myself so I cleaned and handled maintenance personally at all my properties until I realized it was capping my growth. I realized I’d gotten myself a well paying, demanding day job instead of being a business owner. I had to physically remove myself from being nearby to stop running to take care of things myself by moving 1000 mi away from most of my properties. Now my biggest struggle is building a company culture that culminates my core values and supports the dreams of the people that work in it.
How were you able to scale the business?
Set my ego down. If I only wanted Airbnbs that I was the owner of, I’d only have 1 or 2 within this timeframe I’ve been in business. I learned that being a cohost required no money down from me and I could make a percentage of the property someone else owned! I can either get 100% of 1 or 2 pies (Airbnbs) or 10%-30% of 50+ pies.
Tell us a fun story that you recall while you been in business?
Within 3 weeks of moving 1000 mi away, one property got bed bugs AND a crackhead who broke in and I about jumped in my truck and drove all the way there cause I was so beside myself! What can I really do though there that I couldn’t from afar? Police still need to be called, they’ll remove him, cleaners and maintenance will get the place back up and looking good again, and I just gotta submit reports to the police and insurance! Just didn’t know what to do with myself in the moment I almost drove
1000 miles out of panic!
What would you tell the younger generation who are looking to get started in the Airbnb Business?
The barrier to entry isn’t that hard! I promise you if you find a way to get your first one (owning, arbitrage, or cohosting) the rest snowballs! Sincerely! I ACCIDENTALLY got to 30 Airbnbs in my first full year of business. I wasn’t specially gifted with interior design, cleaning, maintenance, or hospitality. It’s simply figuring out one step and then the next and then the next.
